Winter Olympics or winter games is the competition platform for many sports persons where they perform in a wide variety of events. The Winter Games are always held after every four years interval with the next one being held in Vancouver, Canada. It is treated as a sports festival in which thousands of candidates show heir skills and complete with each other.
Winter Olympics is features some specific winter sports related to snow or ice like figure skating, alpine skiing, ice hockey, bobsledding, etc. every season of winter Olympics is held in different countries and regions. But the number of countries that participate in Winter Olympics is far less than summer Olympics participation.
Nowadays winter Olympics reaches to huge global audience as technology has been advanced. All the games and sports held in it are telecasted throughout the whole world through various communication mediums. Many new and advanced games have been introduced from time to time and now speed skiing, bandy; etc games also form a part of Winter Olympics.
Winter Games History And IOC
The first Winter Games was held in 1924 in France and it was called Semaine Internationale des Sports d’Hiver. It is a multi-sports event which is especially held in winter season and held on ice or snow.
The regulatory authority of these games is International Olympics Committee (IOC) which organizes the summer events. Its mission is to encourage and support ethics in sports as well as education of youth through sport and also control every action taken in game in order to ensure fair play. It is the one and only authority to take decisions on the organization of Olympics.
It decides the region where next Olympics are to be held and also regulate and encourage all the activities held in Olympics events in order to ensure safety and ethical and fair play on the platform. All the decision are taken by members of IOC in general meeting held every year in which the pattern of games, timings, hosting, responsibilities and authorities are to be decided. Global reach of Olympic Games through different communication and telecasting medias has brought huge encouragement in youths towards the sports and also the number of viewers is also continuously increasing every year.
So, the popularity of this platform is rapidly increasing and also the awareness and education is improving.
Winter Olympics Schedule
The Winter Olympics games program consists of 7 or more sports which are cross-country skiing, ice hockey, Nordic combined, speed skating, figure skating, ski jumping, etc. Cross-country skiing is especially women’s sports, figure skating is held in singles and pairs with limited number of qualified contestants.
Ice hockey is a sports game which is held between two teams at a time. It is held on ice and is one type of ice skating sports. So, in this way, there are so many types of events and games played on ice or snow. This event is based on medal system of reward.
Rewards For The Winners
A gold medal is given to winner, silver to first runner up and bronze to second runner up. Many countries participate in it and compete with each other to get maximum numbers of medals by winning at different positions.
Winter Olympics is a very encouraging platform for youths to show their skills and abilities to whole world. They are not funded from any outside private or public financial institution but all the funds are collected by IOC through its different sources. The IOC authority also decided to raise more funds by commercialization of event from outside sources in order to introduce some new changes to event in order to modernize it.
As a result, the summer and winter Olympics are held after every two years adjacently instead of being held in same year as done before. This is possibly due to funds control issue as well as organization. The most recent winter Olympics were held in year 2006 in Italy and next winter games will be held in upcoming year 2010 in Canada.
