Whistler Creekside Olympic and Paralympic Village

The Whistler Creekside Olympic and Paralympic Village is one of the top spots for the winter 2010 Olympic Games as it is a highly functional facility which is being brought up at the Whistler resort town in British Columbia. Also known as the Olympic Village, it is known as one of the famous legacy projects of Whistler as it is supposed to be utilized after the completion of the Winter Games for training as well as housing the Canadian athletic talents. As one of the host communities of the Olympic Games this winter in Vancouver, the Whistler Creekside is a neighboring community of the Cheakamus Valley. The site is one that promotes energy efficiency as it has a snowmaking system which has been stalled here at the race courses.

Brief history of Whistler Creekside

The Whistler Creekside arena has been commissioned at about $32 million and is capacitated to hold about as many as 2500 athletes. All the officials as well as athlete who are housed in this space will take into account the amenities offered here as they are participants in the winter 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Once the construction of the facility of Whistler Creekside Olympic and Paralympic Village is complete, the campus will be a lavish property that is all of 100 sprawling rooms and town houses of 20 units. The men’s course has a Fallaway which is located at a lower spot. It is very steep and requires skiers to bend left before dropping off into a compression.

Location

The Whistler Creekside Olympic and Paralympic Village is situated at the Cheakamus Valley which is about 20 minutes from the south of the Mt. Whistler, which is also a competition venue. The arena is also 6 km away from the highway of the sliding events venue of the Whistler Olympic Park located in the Callaghan Valley. Getting here is easy as the gates are scheduled to open at least three hours before the competitions start. If you are taking the rapid transit, go for the Olympic Bus network that has its terminus at the Langara College.

If you are accessing the place from Whistler, it is best to seek the BC Transit from the Gondola Transit Exchange, as there are more and more bus stops which are situated along the Highway No. 99. It takes about 3 hours to travel to the Whistler Creekside Olympic and Paralympic Village from Langara College. Reaching the entrance of the first venue is easy as you need to take a walk of about 400 m uphill from the drop points at the BC and Olympic Transit bus stops. Once here, take the stop to the venue by walking a minimum of about 800 m on gravel walkways or go for the chair lift facility.

If you have gone for the last option, it is best to go right up to the space where the viewing areas are located. There will also be signage facilities near the 2nd entrance for giving you direction. Make it a point to decide earlier on, if you want to take a walk or avail of the chair lift, which offers loading priority as there, may be a long line or queue. There is also a shuttle facility at the Whistler Creekside for disabled spectators who will be dropped about 40 m from the entrance.

What sports will take place at Whistler Creekside?

The Whistler Creekside is a space that will host the alpine skiing games. In fact, this is where there are a total of about 20 grooming machines placed exclusively for this purpose. Grooming as well as snow making are the facilities that had been started at the month of October last year during the construction of the base of the race course. It was up to the month of December that the snow base had been built up. When the games are in progress, there will be a minimum of about 30 operations staff performing full time to help with the following jobs:

  • Water injection
  • Snowmobile transport
  • General race operations
  • Safety net hanging

Winch cats as well as roaming groomers will be present at the Whistler Creekside for the purpose of course maintenance.
