Ice Luge competition at the 2010 Winter Olympics Vancouver

The ice luge competition is one of the most appealing games categories at the Winter Olympics. A luge is actually a small sled that can accommodate either one or at the most two people. While sledding on a luge the competitor faces himself in a position that is face up and the feet first. Thereon the steering for the sled is carried out by flexing the runners of the sled with the player’s calves on each of the legs. Another method is to apply some opposing shoulder pressure on to the seat.

Other than the sled, the term “luge” is also used to refer to the particular sport that involves racing with the sleds of the kind as mentioned above. In the sled racing competition, the competitors race the sleds in opposition to a set timer. This event was included within the official list of Winter Olympic Games way back in 1964. All the three categories, men’s, women’s and the doubles events were included at a single go. The doubles is the mixed event but in general it is competed by teams consisting of two men.
